Welcome to the Colorado Homeowners Mobilization and Education (HOME) Alliance.

HOME Alliance is a not-for-profit grassroots organization. Founded in 2005 HOME is dedicated to protecting the legal and constitutional rights that effect home and property owners. In less than two years HOME Alliance has become an acknowledged leader in public policy education and advocacy.

WHY HOME ALLIANCE

In 1979, the Commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission, Elizabeth Dole (whose husband was at that time serving as a Republican Senator - AND who, herself, would ultimately become a US Senator) addressed the National Association of Home Builders in Nevada. In this speech Commissioner Dole told the Industry that their substandard building and unscrupulous business practices would one day catch up to them.

Elizabeth Dole was wrong. Homeowners and their communities now pay the ultimate price.In the 21st Century the deck of "fairness" is stacked against all American consumers, but no where is that more evident than in home ownership.

Because of legislative changes to legal standards and the proliferation of special rights for Homebuilders in 2006 the American consumer is left holding the bag. Faced with an ever-diminishing ability to legally recoup their damages, today's homeowners and community associations pay a heavy penalty for the shoddy construction, negligence and the "profit-at-all-cost" mentality of the Homebuilding industry.

In recent years additional economic, social and criminal developments threaten the traditional "American Dream" of a home:

• Changes to bankruptcy laws;
• Proliferation of Binding Mandatory Arbitration clauses in virtually every legal contract;
• Increase of mortgage fraud;
• Explosion of mortgage foreclosures across the country;
• Creation of Home Warranty policies that are essentially worthless to the average homeowner;
• Identity Theft;

Colorado Homeowners Mobilization and Education (HOME) Alliance was created to help home owners stay informed of developments that threaten the peaceful enjoyment of their property. HOME is one of many consumer, grassroots, organizations that want average citizens to be aware of these threats and provides an organizational structure to fight to protect their legal rights and stem the further erosion of those rights

WHAT HOME ALLIANCE DOES

HOME Alliance has three major goals:

• HOME is an educational clearinghouse, keeping track of general trends and specific developments that impact Colorado's home and property owners. We track economic trends and other societal factors that may affect Colorado citizens. HOME accumulates this information and actively disseminates it to our membership.
• HOME is a watch-dog group that follows legislative developments on the local, state and federal level. When we detect proposed changes that positively or negatively affect a property and homeowner's rights, we advocate with elected officials and relevant bureaucratic agencies on behalf of our members.
• Finally, HOME Alliance seeks out opportunities to engage our members in protecting their rights and changing public policy when necessary. We actively monitor the political process and help leverage the power of our combined membership to protect and further safeguards on our legal rights.

These three goals work together to make HOME Alliance a powerful tool for change. By making home and property owners aware of new and existing challenges to their legal rights, we give our members the education and advocacy opportunity and tools necessary to effectively protect their investment.

• HOME Regional Educational Seminars: These educational symposiums bring together decision makers, policy analysts, elected officials, industry representatives, legal experts and media professionals to discuss the most pressing issues affecting home and property ownership.

• HOME Legislative Hotline: HOME constantly monitors current and proposed legislative action and its effect on our membership. As warranted by political circumstances, HOME issues special hotline bulletins about about emerging issues that are of concern to our membership.

• HOME Newsroom: Working with other consumer groups across the country, HOME provides an ongoing stream of news reports from Colorado and across the nation. Members have the option of reading a short synopsis or clicking on a link to read the entire article. The Newsroom is updated multiple times during the week.

• HOME Issue Alert: More and more consumers are threatened by fast-moving threats to their well-being. Being educated and aware of these issues is the first line of defense for all Colorado home and property owners. Issues HOME currently track include: Mortgage Fraud, Identity Theft, Changes in the Homebuilder industry and Home Warranty problems.

• Direct Lobbying: Through meetings with elected officials HOME educates legislators and local elected officials about issues important to our membership. Ensuring that our voice is heard, HOME monitors activities along a broad cross-section of political venues and is fast becoming a resource for elected officials to use when contemplating future legislative and administrative changes.
